Do you consider yourself to be a morning person, or not? If you don’t, do you wonder what all the hype is about working out in the morning and if it’s more effective than any other time of the day?

As a holistic personal trainer, many of my clients (and other people, for that matter) ask me how they can get their exercise in and increase their health and fitness, but they’re concerned that they’re not a morning person and don’t see how they can do it or have the time to fit it in.

When this question comes up, I recognize that it is a real thing in their lives – that they are not acquainted with the joy that (can) come from a morning exercise routine, and haven’t tried it long enough to really see and feel the benefits that come along with it.

Drink a cup of joe. I like to have a tea to start my day – Earl Grey is my favorite. There’s nothing wrong with getting your motor runnin’ with a little caffeine to help motivate you. Notice I said, “a little” .. I am not talking about highly caffeinated energy drinks or 700-calorie venti lattes from the coffee shop. Just a little to get you going. This can turn into a nice ritual you can look forward to in the morning – wake up, stretch, get dressed in workout clothes, have a cup of coffee or tea, and go to exercise.

When I was training for my marathon last year, my alarm was going off at 4:00 am. I had to adjust to that time. Yes – it was certainly difficult some mornings, but it became a routine I am acquainted with now and rather enjoy.

Exercising first thing in the morning:

  • Ensures that you get it in
  • Allows you to NOT think about it all day
  • Gives you a MASSIVE shot of confidence because you got up early and did something that earned your own respect
  • Kick-starts your metabolism for the day
  • Creates more energy for your day overall

Sometimes, it really just comes down to making the decision and setting the alarm for 30 minutes earlier than you usually get up – and sticking to it.

When something is important enough to you, I believe you can find a way to make it happen.
